C:N Ratio Guide

Too Low (<20:1) – Smelly, loses nitrogen

Ideal (25-35:1) – Perfect decomposition

Too High (>40:1) – Decomposes slowly

Green Materials (Nitrogen)

• Grass clippings (20:1)

• Kitchen scraps (15:1)

• Coffee grounds (20:1)

• Manure (15:1)

Brown Materials (Carbon)

• Dry leaves (60:1)

• Straw (80:1)

• Wood chips (400:1)

• Cardboard (350:1)

Composting Tips

Aim for a C:N ratio between 25:1 and 35:1 for optimal decomposition. Layer browns and greens, keep the pile as moist as a wrung-out sponge, and turn regularly for aeration. Hot composting (130-160°F) breaks down materials in 3-6 months, while cold composting takes 6-12 months. Avoid meat, dairy, and diseased plants. Finished compost should be dark, crumbly, and smell earthy.
